Standards for food safety
Standards for food safety such as ISO 22000, BRC and IFS are international standards, which set requirements for food safety, and in some cases goes beyond legislation.
Some customers may require a supplier to be certified according to specific food safety standards.
It can be quite demanding to implement a food safety standard. There are many procedures and much documentation that need to be in place. Some companies choose to hire consultants to get a handle on the processes required, to live up to the specific standard.
For a company to get certified, the first step is to buy the standard from the organization. When the company have implemented the processes required, it is necessary to seek endorsement by the certification organization.

ISO 22000
ISO 22000 is an international standard for food safety management published by ISO (International Organization for Standardization) which is a non-profit organization.
ISO 22000 maps out how an organization must work towards ensuring procedures, that support a higher food safety standard.
The latest edition of ISO 22000 is from june 2018.

BRC (British Retail Consortium)
Global Standard for Food Safety is an international standard published by the organization BRC Global Standards, a non-profit organization.
The standard is based on the HACCP principles for risk analysis, and also focuses on senior level managament commitment, food safety, quality management, site standards, product and process control and training of personnel.

IFS
IFS Food version 6.1 Standard for auditing quality and food safety of food products are published by IFS- International Featured Standards. This standard is the result of an association of german supermarket chains. It is a standard owned by HDE (Handelsverband Deutchsland) and FCD (Fédération du Commerce et de la Distribution).
The standard is minded for auditing food manufacturers and focuses on the quality and safety of processes and products.
